The Leopold the third is
over. Canada had 2 teams, Team 1, with John Nugent as captain, other
Vancouverites Brian McGuire and Hugh Tildesley, and Spencer Lanthier from
Toronto. Team 2 was Mike Kirby, Rob Tweedy, Cam Deacon and Rich Hodgson. The format
was 2 man best ball day I, alternate shot 2 man day 2 and individual scores
with 3 of 4 counting day 3. All scoring was stableford, 1 point for bogie, 2
for par, 3 for birdie and 4 for eagle.
We jumped into a substantial
lead on day 1, held our own on day 2 and persevered on day 3. In fact our team
1 won both the low net and the low gross. Captain Nugent felt it inappropriate
for us to win both thus the Belgians were declared winners of the low gross as
they were next closest to us. In addition John won the low gross on day 3.
Technically a team Canada sweep!
A cocktail reception followed
the third round and promises of our return in 2015 to defend were made.
A victory dinner of sorts
followed, and some libations continued on the patio following. Nugent sensibly
left early as he continues his golfing trek, this time to Port Marnoch in
Dublin ( yes, he is a member there too!). I last saw the Pope on the patio in
deep debate with Kirby, I left I view of our trip to Passau via Munich in the
am. Thus ends the golfing part of the journey. Wonderful links golf at Burnham
and Barrow and then the satisfaction of staying focused for the win in Belgium.
