Sclogen to Linz

The view from our room in Schlogen

We have determined that 0830 start would be optimal, the time used to organize our bikes the day before had proved problematic. European breakfasts are superb, and we take time to enjoy a hearty meal and then make our lunches from cold cuts and bread left out for that purpose.

Silt deposited 15 feet above current river level
We so far had been amazed at the condition of the bike paths in spit of evidence of extensive debris and silt deposited well inland. Although not necessarily on the same tour there are many bikers at the hotel and all are going to Linz.We traveled through canopied forests adjacent to the winding Danube, very few hills and the pitch running gradually in our direction toward Vienna. We have been supplied with detailed maps, each page showing points of interest and the maps easily stowed in our handlebar pack. I of course have my Tom Tom; Drew has not yet activated his iphone but has his Garmin. Since for the most part the roads are obvious with good signage we are confident in our maneuvering.

At about 25 km we came across a road, which was impassable. A few hundred yards back was a ferry crossing, but there were men repairing the gang way and no ferry was in sight. Coincidently we saw a guided tour returning from the road we judged as blocked, the guide was far from forthcoming with advice as to what to do but was clearly back tracking.

We had had lunch about 5 km back, just passed a small hydro dam and lock, and w
River cruiser most are essentially empty
e decided to cross there. After about 4 km we were at the other side of the river and low and behold, the structure we had determined was a dock started to move. It was the damn ferry! Even in retrospect we had difficulty second guessing the decision.

Drew’s biggest worry was the road into Linz, and crossing the bridge. We make excellent time and the bridge crossing was uneventful, the road to the hotel was along the city tramline. These trams really do not stop, we took  a detour off the line and made our way to the hotel. The bikes were stowed, a short rest then a beer garden dinner. We continue to enjoy spectacular weather and very few surprises.
